Cotton Wool Kids Too much traffic on the roads and perhaps an irrational fear of stranger danger means that kids today are more protected, cosetted or wrapped in cotton wool than any previous generation in history. Quite what this means for the future is open to debate, but many of us know that we are who we are as grown ups today because we had the luxury of a certain freedom as children. At Green Shoots we want kids to have the chance to climb trees, make dens and run wild in the relatively safe confines of the garden. Get your kids to join CWK - NO WAY! and or the WildThing Club and let’s go wild in the city.
Every Thursday in August Green Shoots will be having fun making things in the garden - things to take home to create or add to your own home art gallery. These sessions are free Season Schools We are running four season schools a year.Week long schools for children and their families (all children under 8 must be accompanied by an adult) during each of the seasons. Working artists, ecologists, storytellers and others we will closely examine nature and art relating to the seasons and in doing so have lots of fun. Our first Season School starts on Monday July 27 to Friday July 31. £1 per session or £2 per day 10.30-4.30pm - all materials provided (bring a packed lunch)
Linda Banks, is the environmental DevelopmentWorker at Green Shoots. Linda is both well qualified in the field of environmental science and well experienced in delivering environmental actvities. She has worked on many environmental projects in London and will be delivering much of our schools programme.Working cross curriculum she will be adding value to many areas of primary school pupils learning. You’d Better Bee lieve It! At Green Shoots we fully appreciate he vital role the bee plays in the planet’s eco-system. Bees pollinate 70% of the food we eat. They are the only insect in the world that produces food that humans eat but now the bee is under threat. A combination of a deadly virus, pesticides and intensive farming methods have led to a massive reduction in the number of bees around the world. There are 25 native species of bee in Britain, but three are already extinct and, of the 22 remaining, 8 are becoming increasingly rare. The number of bees in the UK alone has fallen by between 10 and 15 per cent over the last two years. At Green Shoots we want to do what we can in the inner city to stop this awful trend. We want to help increase the number of bees in the world, we want to play a small but important part in saving the planet. So we’ve developed an apiary (a place where bees live) with two hives in.We hope to produce honey and wax and make a small but very important contribution to increasing the number of honey bees in London. Come along and find out more about bees, see our apiary and how you can help save the planet.
NO WAY!
